JMule按照官方网站的解释为“JMule – Java eDonkey2000 peer to peer file sharing client”，Jmule是一个基于Java开发的电驴p2p文件共享客户端。着这意味着JMule天生的跨平台性。目前的最新版本为2010-01-13发布的JMule 0.5.8 。
JMule完全基于GNU GPL开源，JMule名字的含义是：“J”表示Java，而“Mule”则表示一个长得像马又像驴子的动物，骡子。我们可以称之为“J骡”或是“Java电骡”。
